...since there was so much interest in the hatch, I thought I'd post some images of the new dungeon level at the BigRedBatCave. Above is the larger end of the space, with the old, damp, clinker floor removed. This will, shortly, be covered with a concrete slab.
Here's the area under the hallway, before painting.
...and after, now coated with a damp-resistant slurry, in a dungeon-friendly battleship grey. I may add some manacles.
Next step is for the concrete slab to go in. In the coming weeks, I plan to get the pipework tucked away and put in some ventilation.

Nice space! You should be able to get a decent sized table down in there!
Hi Ray, no this will just be storage space, that's what I'm desperate for, just now. I might possibly dig out a gaming space next year, though.
An interesting project Simon ., look forward to seeing it develop
Very innovative idea Simon. You obviously are building far too many armies mate...how wonderful!
When my basement was damp and dingy I used to keep my figures (in really useful boxes)there, now that the height has been increased, it's tanked and waterproof and there is a proper staircase going into it, I find there is no space for miniatures! Don't make it too nice!
Best Iain
Far too many, Carlo. :)
Hi Iain, wise words. I will tell the family there are rats, there, that should keep it safe for the minis! ;-)
An enterprising solution to your problem. Do you need any planning permissions for all this excavation?
Eons ago, as a teenager, we had a poured concrete, partially finished basement in my parents house - very common, in the US, as you probably know. That was mostly devoted to my dad'd woodworking shop. There was one part of the house, though, that just had a sort of "window" through a cinder block wall, from which you could see the foundation of one room of the house, which had an apparent dirt floor. At that time (circa age 15) I was using the un-insulated attic of my parent's house as my wargaming area. It was spacious, but like an oven in summer, and bitterly cold in winter. So the plan was that I would knock down the partitioning wall, dig out the space, and then my dad would have concrete poured, and I could have that basement room for my wargames. Well, let me tell you, those cinder blocks were tough, and it took me a couple of months to batter them down with a sledge hammer!
Once that was completed, and I started to dig, we discovered the reason that part was unfinished. What looked like dirt was in fact an enormous rock, an rather than blast it out or similar, the builders had simple built around it. So, no basement wargames room for me in that house. A side effect was that the battered down wall now allowed water that welled up aound the lock to enter the main, dry basement. This necessitated replacing the wall that I had painstakingly battered down. My dad was not happy, LOL!
If I know you mate Tom will shortly be followed by Dick and Harry!
Storage space!!! Wow! I knew you had a lot of miniatures but.....
Looking great and can't wait to see the end results :)
