This is my sister unit to last week's clibanarii; these are the Equites Catafractarii Iuniores, a Vexillationes Comitatenses unit under the control of the Comes Britanniarum. Unusually, I painted most of these myself some years back; I have just "tarted them up" a bit including rebasing and giving them new bling-y lances. They can deploy in line or cuneus.

Hi Simon. Looking at the Cats- what size basing did you go for?
I ask as I'm thinking of putting together a Middle Imperial Roman army for both Impetus and TtS and I'm trying to work out what size bases to use, with max. Vignette effect for both Light Infantry, Heavy Infantry, Medium Inf., Light Cav., Heavy Cav, Medium Cav- also how many miniatures per base (assuming no vignette).
I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts.
Hi I'd say 12-13 cm; I'd put 6 cavalry on one of those, or 12-16 foot.
Thanks Simon. I'm doing Middle Imperial for TtS.
I reckon I'm going to go for one large base of 120mm wide (so it can double up for Impetus & Dux Bellorum) base with two wings of 30mm wide on either side.
This is more or less what you did for your own Middle imperial Romans- is that correct? Do I have the dimensions right?
All bases will be 60mm deep.
Cheers
Yes that's a good plan- that way you can use the minis on a 200cm grid, too. Very similar to the way I base.
I think the larger units look more like actual tactical groups of soldiers. I'm really not into small units- of course, there's nothing wrong with smaller units- they just don't work for me.
I can't wait to get my mitts on the A&A Mid Imperials! They are just fantastic sculpts. The Cavalry is on it's way to me as I type. Special offer..... it would have been rude not to! :>)
I had Dave Imrie's lovely A&As- swapped them with a friend- regretted it ever since!
Yeah, David certainly has a great eye for creating dynamic sketches of soldierly life.
Have you read his article for the MIG book on painting wargames miniatures? He concentrates on the aesthetic of the unit. Well worth a read if you haven't already Simon.
