Raetian Auxilia III

My Raetians are coming on...

I'm 4 painting sessions in, on the 24 miniatures.

  • Session 1 paint/transfers on shields
  • Session 2 base coat on mail (a 50/50 mix of black and Boltgun Metal)
  • Session 3 tunics, base and highlight, shorts, base and highlight
  • Session 4 flesh, base and highlight

I probably have another 3-4 sessions to go, plus a couple for basing.

Good idea to mix black & metallic together to basecoat the mail. I use a black wash over white or gray primer followed by a cople of coats of Tamiya smoke to get a faintly metallic look. Will have to experiment with your method. Thanks for yet another good tip!

Cheers,
Aaron

They look nice figures Simon and would be good for up on Hadrian's Wall in winter.

Thanks chaps.

Hi Aaron, I may just leave the mail the basecoat colour, it looks quite effective as it is! Have you tried Impetus? I'm just reading the rules. It looks quite promising.

Hi Paul, yes I'm hoping to give them a wet-look. I may make the bases muddy with puddles. There really should be snow on the bases, but then they would look too out of place next to their comrades.

I'd be interested to hear your take on Impetus, Simon. I've only played the Basic version, but will purchase the full rules eventually. I enjoy it, but be warned that a lot depends on the cohesion test! There are some house rules about that can limit this a bit though if it's not to your taste.

Hi Aaron, yes there are other aspects that concern me (pila!), but there are bits that look quite good. Certainly good enough to give it a go, anyhow.

Nice figures. And here's the place to put them, provided someone creates a miniature of the fort. :)

BTW, I found your blog by clicking through a few links from Iron Mitten.

Thanks Gabrielle. I will need a couple of forts; a small auxiliary cohort-sized one, and a big one for my legion. I'd love to see that German one in the flesh, sometime.

Tonight I finished the Raetians; they took exactly 7 painting sessions (although they still need to be varnished and based, which will be 2 more).

The Saalburg is definitely worth a visit. I don't think there are any other completely reconstructed forts around. Plus there was a Raetian cohort.

There are more remains along the Limes border, of course. Not so much of the Limes itself which was constructed of timber and earth for the most part, but of the forts along it. I need to hunt down a few more of them. ;)

If I'm ever in Germany, I shall make a beeline for it! Thanks, Simon
