Completed Galatian Mercenaries!

Galatian mercenaries, hired from the Celtic tribes on the central plateau of Asia Minor, were not uncommon in Successor armies. These depict mercenaries serving the Ptolemies, and are loosely based on the reconstruction in the Ptolemaic Montvert; I'm very pleased with them. The images are clickeable, and previous posts show the various stages of painting.

Is it my imagination, or is the woman in the background, below, smiling as they approach her? ;-)

Very nice, the red rust idea was inspired and worked really well.

I have just recieved my Silflor grass tufts today after your recommendation. They will make my life a lot easier, thanks for the tip.

Hi Secundus; yes they are so handy, I'm planning to order some more for collection at Salute. And some Sea Moss!

The chief have a renegade head : right ?

BTW, I ve received my Renegade celts : I was terrified by the size of their swords and horses.

oh and they re very nice )

and do you have a good source for all the shield designs or is it just osprey ?

I m going to need some reference for the shields of my Spartacus army, the captured ones, and if the "soldiers" are absolutely not historic as said before, I would like to have very accurate shields.

Bonjour Greg,

The chiefs head- either Renegade, or Foundry Caesarian; can't remember which! What a lot of head swaps you've been doing.

Renegade horses= sell on eBay
Renegade swords= cut and file down to a sensible size.

The shields are based on a Ptolemaic Grave painting so are as historical as I can get.

When you do the Caesarian shields, let me know as I know a bit about them (not that there is much to know)!

Cheers,
Simon

Renegade swords : Humm I was thinking about making my own swords or just replacing them all with spears and javelins. I ll give a chance to your method too.

@Secundus : For Salute, come ith your big white mug, so I can recognise you ! (yep, that was my silly post of the day)

Greg, on mine with some I cut the sword off, and replaced with a spear. With others, where I kept the sword, I used snippers to cut about 1mm off each edge of the sword, and finished using a file; it takes about 5 minutes a miniature.

or I could just make a celtic cricket team ? (finally, that one is the silly one).

BigRedBat said...

Seems appropriate; apparently cricket was invented by the Belgians (no the Brits).

Thanks for all the additional information that I spied on in your conversation above. ;)

I just got some of the Renegade Celts and I'm also not sure how the horses will look when put on the table with other figures.

I avoided buying ths sword regiment because of the "cricket bat" issue. I had considered cutting the swords off & drilling the hands for spears (as Gregory mentions.) I'll give your trimming advice it a try on the command figures I got in the spear regiment. One has a dagger and looks like he's holding a trowel & getting ready to lay some bricks, so if he trims up nicely, I may consider some swordsmen.

Hi Zero,

The horses are so big, I've not been able to think of a way of using them, yet; they look like knight's destriers! Perhaps with some green stuff they would make good shire horses. ;-)

Once you get the hang of how to do the swords, they can be pretty swift to fix. I do like the Renegade Celts, lovely minis! Some of the BTD celts are pretty good, too.

Arr yes the giant horses of Renegade...I know them well...sigh.

Next to my Foundry ECW, my renegade lot look like they're riding into battle on Imperial ATAT's.

Mind you you did warn BRB.

ZeroTwentythree said...

Heh... ATATs... :D

An exaggeration. Rhinoceros cavalry maybe... ;)

I can't imagine what they'd look like next to tiny Old Glory horses!

I do agree, the Renegade figures are very nice, scale issues aside.

BigRedBat said...

ATATs; ROTFLMAO! Renegade horses; more Giraffe than Rhino?

There has to be a use for them. I toyed with sculpting scale armour on them, and calling them Nicean chargers. Or scratch building some scythed chariots for them to pull...
