I am just finishing some bases on a couple of regiments of cavalry for Roundway Down (at Partizan in late May), and I found myself wondering whether anyone else uses their wife's hairdryer to blow away surplus flock? Also does anyone else matt varnish their finished flock? I find it comes out better in photos, that way.

I do use a hairdryer but now it is mine..( she has got a new one..hahahah) I use it for many reasons and one of them is the mentioned above. I never varnish the grass tufts but I will give it a try. Thanks for the tip :)

I use my airbrush for that purpose.
Well I’m going to use hair dryer from now on Simon. How could I have not done that all these bloody years? I do gloss varnish all my figures now using Humbrol enamel and then dulcote. Very nice protective coating for rough hands and sharp enemy pike blocks.
Excellently painted models and figures, I varnish terrain pieces but not figure bases. I found that when varnishing bases with figure on flock got on the figures. Though I do occasionally use cheap Tesco hair spray to stop flock from falling off bases.

Two things:
1 - It seems that you are moving away or temporarily predisposed to periods that are not ancient . . .
2 - The things we (meaning a certain portion of those in the hobby who create miniature masterpieces) do in order to make our tabletops look pretty and admirable . . . I suppose there is an article or blog post(s) there with regard to "around the house" items that are enlisted in the pursuit of out hobby. It does appear that many of us are rather clever or industrious in this regard.

I was in the habit of using Satin varnish with black paint added then spraying over with Matt varnish when basing all completed, trying to give the flock a good soaking for extra adhesion.
More lately I have been inking and just going straight to Matt varnish once all based.
