After the battle

We played another game between Caesarians and Pompeians, tonight, using the rules I'm developing (with lots of help from friends).  These shots are of the devastated battlefield at the end of what turned out to be a particularly bloody battle (especially for the Pompeians!).  The game lasted about two and a half hours, and the mechanics worked very nicely, although the elephants were a little pedestrian and need to be "sexed up", somewhat.  Of particular note is the iPad; this was the first time I've ever run a game from one, and I must say it worked very well, indeed.  Also of note are the two empty wine bottles, which lubricated proceedings.  A jolly session!

We're now all iPad converts. We use them to keep army lists (and track damage on the lists using pdf annotators). It's also useful for photographing the battle as it progresses - and especially for command arrows(so the referee can see exactly where each side is heading for).

What its also good for is hidden movement and placement. Get the defending side to place the troops - photograph them - then remove the troops. The attacker is then faced (as would be the case) with an empty battlefield.

This leads to much more cautious deployment and movement (again more realistic) and many more thrills and spills (as the enemy is revealed). Makes for a much more exciting and realistic game.

Thanks chap! Phil, there are some brilliant ideas in your comment, I'll be trying them out, soon!

A game of that size in two and a half hours is good going. A good indication that the rules (as well as the wine)is flowing.

Thanks Pat, yes it did rattle along nicely for an 800-mini game.

Looking lovely!

I love my iPad for wargaming as well. It is a charm to keep OOBs and the like on it. It is just a shame that none of the rules we use are available for it!

Thanks! I'm very glad I've recently discovered iPads, myself. It's going to save me a whole lot of paper and printer ink...
