Praetorians WIP

Mate Nick Speller recently sent me the first of two planned instalments of Praetorians, and I just couldn’t resist getting transfers onto their shields (on which I still need to do just a little highlighting and detailing).  These are all Foundry models from the Saleh range, which I do love passionately, even though there are no varied poses.  In the background are the newest two cohorts of auxiliaries which I need to grit my teeth, and flock!

  1. Like the stripes on the pilum Simon, better you than me!I'm struggling with the Aventine Praetorian crests, you've gone for a nice white.I've tried an off white,a red, and a black thus far.........not happy with any!!.Anyway, keep knocking them out, good seeing them!

  2. Hi Gordon, better Nick than me! ;-)

The crests are an off white painted over a darker off white. I gave them a little ink wash around the roots. Something like:-

  3. Very tasty indeed! Excuse my ignorance, but the discs they are on now, is that just for painting? If so what do you glue them down with to allow you to safely remove them when done?

  4. Hi Michael, yes those are just for painting/varnishing. They are old gaming tokens (Laser cut MDF would do just as well), 40mm diameter with magnetic sheet stuck on so that they don't slip around the tray. I temporarily attach the minis with a little white glue, and they are easy enough to remove.

  5. Lovely! At this rate you'll be able to a legion at 1:1 soon ;o)

Thanks for the painting bases tip. Might try that one.

    Regards

  6. Lovely! I personally do not care for the lack of variety... I build (Warlord plastics) all my Praetorians in this pose. Standing at attention simply gives such a guardsmen impression!

  7. Yes I'm also very happy for guards to be somewhat regimented, but ideally a few different expressions.

  8. I'm a big fan of Saleh as well. He did such brilliant work for Foundry - its a shame you don't see more of his stuff around as its so solid.

    Beautiful unit btw!

  9. You see plenty of his stuff around here, Curt! ;-) I have around 500 of his legionaries, 150 auxiliaries and the 50 praetorians.
