Tin Soldier vs Black Tree Design Romans

Someone was asking on TMP whether BTD Romans fit with Tin Soldier's.  I have a few Tin Soldiers and have shot a couple above (2&4) next to some BTDs (1&3).

I think one could just about get away with it, although I find the Tin Soldiers crude by comparison with the BTDs (big heads and stocky legs; something of the dwarf about them.  And that horn!).  Having said that, I have 6, they are painted and I might just base them up.

  1. They look alright in the pic.
Sprinkle them through a cohort and no one will really notice!

I once was facing a shield wall of Medieval foot andit was an hour or so before I noticed he'd stuck a bloody Aztec figure in the middle of his unit "just to use it up and fill out the unit"!

  2. I don't rate them... but I do have an inspiration on what I might be able to use them for...

  3. I would definitely include them. You are right, they are cruder, but in a rank and file setup they won't be noticed in a negative way.

    Thanks for the helpful comparison.

  4. I thnk it must be just me, then! I do have a well-deserved reputation for being a fussy so'n'so. Especally ruthless over size...

  5. Same height overall - but quite a difference in proportions. Nice painting BTW. Dean

  6. Hi Dean, they are a mm or two shorter but within human ranges I guess. Plump little legs...

I didn't paint them- IIRC they are from Tin Soldier's painting service. They are well done, but I'm not mad on the darklining style.

  7. Well, always remember that you are seeing the miniatures from an angle and about a meter away... For my Saxons I am considering mixing Musketeer, GB, Tanatus and Foundry. They all have quite different styles but with a similar painting styles those differences more or less disappear.

  8. Hi Doc, but I'd know, you see...

I do like mixing minis from different complementary ranges, myself. Makes units a bit unique.

  9. Hehe :D I know what you mean. It stays in the back of your head making you crazy until you do something about it.. :)

  10. Tin figures are better suited for the relief ones, not the three dimensional. The relief ones are very popular in Germany and you can still make an army of them look natural.

But I don't have the skills for painting such tiny things anyway. Five thumbs on each hand and all that ... :)
