My own Velites Finished

Here are the 32 velites from yesterday; thoroughly finished.  These will probably be my only contribution to the Roman legions in our game (although I have an emergency reserve of 32 part-painted Renegade Principes in case we are struggling; I hope not to go there, though).

The shields are a mix of Renegade and Aventines, and the transfers, mostly VVV and some LBMS.  I was particularly pleased with the way the grass came out.

  1. The bases are incredible! VERY realistic. What did you use for the grass? Just silflor or that with other things?

    Consul.

  2. Simon:

They look great! I love the uniform look - using different shield icons, but being the same colors. I agree with Consul too - your basing is impeccable. Regards, Dean

  3. Thanks chaps!

I've decided that grass looks more realistic when it is mixed up, so I'm using 4mm and 6mm Silfor tufts, and also a blend of 2 different static grasses (including some 6mm length stuff from Atenociti that I spotted Iron Mitten using).

Then I dry brush it all with Yellow Ochre, and then Buff Titanium, to make it look dried out. Basing fascist! :-)

  4. Thanks. I might try that - need some decent coloured static grass though, mine looks like some mouldy vegetables. How do you make static grass more static?

Where are the blue shield transfers from?

  5. Hobbytac from Antenocitii; brilliant stuff! Buy some of the 6mm long grass, too.

Most of the blue transfers are black VVV transfers, overpainted to match the colour of some LBMS wolves.

  6. Are these done using the dip method? They look really good.

  7. No dipping, but I used black drawing ink mixed into Johnson's Klear, which delivers a somewhat similar effect. However there was already a heavy wash on the figures when I bought them.

I've not dipped my toe into Army Painter yet, so as to speak. I'll buy a tin at Salute...

  8. They certainly look the business BRB. The basing is great - wish I could get hold of some of that grass you use.

You realise of course that with these and your dead Nellies you'll have to take heaps of shots from the Zama game for us to drool over!

    Cheers,
    Doc

  9. Very nice indeed Simon and I echo what Consul and the others have said, that basing is the best I have seen anywhere. Those Nellies just don't stand a chance with that lot.
    Cheers Paul

  10. Ave pictor optime! That's great stuff, nothing to add about the bases. I like the somewhat irregular look you've created whital the number of miniatures per stand.
    Keep up the superb work!

    Cheers

  11. Thanks all! Now I need to redo all my other bases to match. ;-)

I may lean on my mate Ian to take photos of the Zama game; he's very good with a camera....

  12. This is a handsome unit. I like the white shields even more now that you've finised the basing.
