Romans wot I am basing this week

This is my latest Caesarian recently-recruited legion; I'll write them up properly when the basing is finished on Friday or Saturday.

Two days ago I though varnishing was definitely the most boring modelling-related activity; I have to say, though, that applying base texture to 54 figures (as I did last night after this photo was taken) is right up there alongside it.

The seven primed figures at the back are fated to become Tegeans.

    This is my favourite Legion so far!!! I really like them alot. Nice details on the shields and a nice mix of colours.

    Have you bought any of those new bare headed Caesarian Romans from Foundry to scatter into your ranks? I can't bring myself to bend to the cost of them, but they would be useful.

    Hi Secundus, yes I had an epiphany about the shields, I'm really pleased with them.

    There are 2 or 3 of the bareheaded Foundry figures mixed into the unit. They are rather crude compared to the Copplestones, and very expensive. The "giant" sculptors at Foundry have been replaced by pygmies. I think you would get better results doing headswaps yourself (using the Westwind Romano British heads).

    I like the text on the shields. There are several references to soldiers painting words on their shields (in classical texts), so I'm happy to see it done on your models!

    I am open to suggestions as to further slogans... if anyone has any very pithy Roman quotations. My painting skills will only fit a dozen or so letters on a shield...

    There is evidence for writing the unit commander's name on the shield (which you have done), and the unit name. I haven't read of any mocking slogans on shields, although they DO appear on lead sling bullets. That would be interesting to research.

    Hi Andrew, there isn't any evidence for slogans as far as I know, it just seemed like a fun idea! Recently I've been inclined to take a few liberties with research. I think it is my repressed fantasy gaming side oozing through.

    I thought about using slogans off the slingshot, too; may do so on the next unit.
