Aquila and Vexilla Stands

These are my Legion Command stands; 4 have aquila and the other two vexilla. I'm going to need another 4 or 5 to meet my new 10-legion plan. Most figures painted by Nick; some by myself A grim looking bunch...

Very nice as always. I particularly like the gold near the corners of the vexilla - I may well pinch that idea when I eventually get round to doing some of my own!

I must confess, I want to repaint the red of the vexilla because it is too dull, and because I can do lettering, now. I have a new vexilla to post in the next day or so, which is the real DB's...

Cheers, Simon

Great miniatures! I shall have to try a little harder with my character pieces when I get round to painting them!

Hey! I've come back to this post for reference as i'm painting some of my command figures. I'm currently painting the figure on the middle of your middle front base (with the sword by his side)

I wanted him to be a young and inexperienced leader but I wondered if you had any tips in how to make him look like this (hair colour, features, etc)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Consul, he's sculpted as a fairly mature, serious chap; that may not be easy! Those tribunes are a hard-bitten bunch.

I'd avoid painting any 5 o'clock shadow on his chin, and avoid heavy lines. Maybe a light brown hair colour?

Thanks for the swift response! I'll follow the advice and hopefully some photos will be up in the next few weeks (i'm really cracking on with the painting again after a 3 month break and i've nearly finished a unit of Spanish skirmishers which should be finished by tomorrow)

I'd love to see them.

Take it from one who knows, and don't start too many more armies! I have over 20 armies underway in 28mm, and only a few are of a size large enough to use in a battle. :-(

Happy painting!

Haha! You're starting to sound like my parents!

I'm concentrating solely on my Romans at the minute and when they're pretty much finished I'm moving onto my Macedonians...and then I have some other figures to be getting on with ;)

Very wise, Consul. Now eat your spinach and do your homework! ;-)

I have terrific focus when it comes to painting a unit, but very little about sticking to one or two periods.

Where did you get the Gregory Peck look-a-like from on the base at the back with his hand out?

I'm guessing that he may be a Companion Miniature; same armatures as Foundry, but different details.

They are very unreliable to buy from, though.
